Grammys Add Alicia Keys, Feist, Beatles Tribute To Performer Lineup

Cyndi Lauper and Natalie Cole to present.
By Gil Kaufman

In what could turn out to be her big coming-out moment, indie rocker and Best New Artist nominee Feist, famous for the "1234" song featured in a ubiquitous iPod ad, has been added to the list of performers for the upcoming Grammys Awards ceremony. Also joining the performer list are Alicia Keys and country star Brad Paisley, as well as a special tribute to the Beatles featuring the casts of the Las Vegas show "LOVE by Cirque du Soleil" (based on the Fab Four's music) and the Beatles-inspired big-screen musical "Across the Universe."

The 50th annual awards show, which takes place on February 10, also announced the first slate of presenters, which will feature a variety of past Grammy winners including Natalie Cole, Juanes, Cyndi Lauper, Bette Midler and Bonnie Raitt. And the prime-time spot for Canadian songwriter/ sometime Broken Social Scene member Leslie Feist will give the "1234" singer her biggest national (and international) exposure to date.

The Grammys previously announced performances by Beyoncé, Foo Fighters (with special guest conductor Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones), Carrie Underwood, a gospel segment featuring Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, the Clark Sisters, Israel & New Breed and Trin-I-Tee 5:7, and Rihanna performing with reunited Minneapolis funk band the Time.

After fears the show might be crippled by the ongoing Hollywood writers' strike, it was announced this week that the writers guild had given its members a waiver to work on the golden-anniversary show. And though her English publicity firm recently said plans still call for six-time nominee Amy Winehouse to make an appearance at the event, her recent decision to enter a rehabilitation facility to treat substance abuse has once again cast that appearance into question.

Cat Power - Jukebox review

Cat Power's incomparable creative work

American singer Chan Marshall more well-known under the scenic nick-name Cat Power has been surprising the audience with her unique and incomparable creative work. Her inimitable style has been formed up with the years accompanied by rises and falls of which the latter overly prevailed and were mostly to do with the never-ending struggle with her own fears and the lack of self-confidence. During the time Marshall has been going in for music she has come a long way, and today one can easily make sure of that. This year the artist releases already the second collection of cover versions called Jukebox, a follow-up to 2000's The Covers Record. Cat Power once again demonstrates her original approach to covers on the record: one can hardly recognize the original of the compositions on Jukebox because of the greatly changed melody, the general slant, tempo and often the lyrics of the songs. At her concerts the singer is known to surprise the audience with cover versions, and the new record is only the part of what one could heat of late. Yet the faultless quality and the wonderful novelty of songs on Jukebox provide the fullest idea of what this original performer is able to do.

Chan Marshall's cosmic voice is in the centre of attention on Jukebox

There are ten covers of other artists' songs, one of her own and one brand new composition on Jukebox, which seems to be in a full correspondence with the tradition of a cover collection. In fact, it is only the form that meets the requirements for the content is anything else that you have expected. Faithful to her minimalist style Cat Power reduces each song to guitar and her voice with rare additions of piano, organ and drums. Her band she put together last year The Dirty Delta Blues Band plays so artfully that it gives you the creeps, despite the fact that it is practically unheard on Jukebox as there is Chan Marshall's cosmic voice in the centre of attention throughout. The album’s opener New York, the famous anthem sung in their times by Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli, is turned into a beautiful ballad full of amazing half tones, and Cat Power's song Metal Heart that this year turns ten year obtains an absolutely different coloring symbolizing the changes that have happened during this time: from a young shy girl the performer has grown into a brilliant artist who still remembers her past. The songs that merely leave one speechless here are Silver Stallion, a splendid emotional composition performed with the guitar accompaniment only and Aretha, Sing One For Me, refined with the spectacular sounds of organ, whereas piano lead tracks Don't Explain and Women Left Lonely are interesting jazzy numbers. Certainly new composition Song To Bobby devoted to whom but Bob Dylan deserves attention proving that Cat Power's talent of an author and composer is still on top.

An inspiring story of professional growth

Back in the beginning of the 1990s when she just hit twenty the singer began experimenting with her voice, guitar and a piano and perform as the opening act for more famous bands and singers. Whereas her own shows were always accompanied by heavy alcohol drinking, which resulted into Cat Power's gaining the reputation of not a professional self-conscious and eternally drunk artist who, nevertheless, did compose and perform interesting music and possessed a wonderful voice. Gradually Marshall got a constantly growing fan base, her albums were warmly welcomed by the critics, and the collection The Greatest released in 2006 proved to be among the best records of the year. After the collection release Chan had a nervous breakdown and took a hiatus, and on restoring her force recorded probably her most professional and confident work that is Jukebox. The story of Cat Power is a story of professional growth which can leave nobody indifferent and is sure to inspire more than one desperate. It is hard to say what form this personality creative in all ways will take the next time, and it is exactly what makes the expectation so exciting.

Plagiarism: to be or not to be

For a long time me the theme of plagiarism interested.

Today has learned, that known group The Eagles "has borrowed" a theme at group Jethro Tull. The hit Hotel California "has made" from a theme We used to know.

Well, what's next?

Puff Daddy- Angels With Dirty Faces is plagiarism of Fantasy (Earth, Wind and Fire)

Rainbow- Catch the Rainbow is plagiarism of Little Wing (J. Hendrix)

Crazy Town- Butterfly is plagiarism of Pretty Little ditty (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Enrique Iglesias- Escape is plagiarism of Beautiful girl (INXS)

It's impossible to write the same melody twice, but to sell it's possible.(c)

to be continued...

Long Road Out Of Eden

It is actually hard to believe that the last full studio work of the legendary rockers The Eagles was released 28 years ago, for its hits including the eternally young Hotel California never cease to be popular. The collective disbanded in 1980 and reunited only in 1994 to release a successful live album Hell Freezes Over. On the turn of the centuries the internal conflicts began once again and ended with Don Felder's leaving the band and the lawsuits to follow from both parties. It is only this year that the remaining members Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmidt and Joe Walsh are releasing the newest studio effort called Long Road Out Of Eden, the first after 1979's The Long Run. The album has been worked on for almost six years, and it has proved to be worthy of the expectation. Record Long Road Out Of Eden presents a unique collection of twenty songs that have united the past and the present within, for the sound of the album is undoubtedly all The Eagles, and even the modern arrangements have failed to disguise the spirit of the 1980s, present on each track.

The themes on Long Road Out Of Eden vary from life stories of misfortunate people to the tough criticism of the modern life styles and ways to make relations. The opener No More Walks In The Wood is a lyrical ballad, accompanied only by a quiet guitar, whereas How Long is a melodious rock-n-roll composition. A country flavor of song Busy Being Fabulous demonstrates the band's classic manner of performance, and Guilty Of The Crime is a funny rock number with the piano. Desperation and cynicism are heard in the lyrics of Waiting In The Weeds, a slow reflexive song. One of the most soulful compositions on the record is No More Cloudy Days with a wonderful instrumental background, while Fast Company is another great track remarkable for Frey's falsetto vocals. A deeply felt philosophic title composition Long Road Out Of Eden leaves no doubt that The Eagles is still able to write texts with a vivid imagery and inimitable metaphors. The track lasts over ten minutes and presents a real work of art. A rhythmic song Frail Grasp On The Big Picture is a superb rock number, and quite a long composition Last Good Time In Town, lasting around seven minutes, is refined with the elements of Latin guitar. A beautiful anthem to women I Love To Watch A Woman Dance is refined with an expressive harmonica, and Business As Usual demonstrates the band members' attitude toward the modern world. The album closes with a beautiful song It's Your World Now pleasing with typical Mexican wind instruments that make it a nice accompaniment for a romantic evening.

During the period when The Eagles temporarily ceased to exist some of the collective's members pursued solo careers, and not unsuccessfully. The best received were the works of Henley, but The Eagles' new album has definitely outdone all of them. Long Road Out Of Eden is a varied, solid and thus a very interesting creation. Considering the time spent on the recording of the new material it is not surprising that the result has proved to be more than just satisfactory. Listening to this amazing record you feel like going back in time. The vocalists' soft vocals and the inimitable guitars that can be barely heard or practically deafen the listeners caress the ear as they did thirty years ago, and it seems as if the collective has never disbanded. With its sensational comeback The Eagles have shown everyone that it is never too late to get back the former glory and continue to conquer the fans' hearts with a splendid music. Nobody can say for sure how much time the band's next creation is going to take, and no matter what Long Road Out Of Eden has enough material to make the expectation less difficult.

Flo Rida on absolute top

Flo Rida is breaking digital records, sitting atop the "TRL" countdown and resting comfortably at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the fourth straight week with "Low". But the rise of the Opa-Locka, Florida, native had its share of waves. As the youngest of seven — all the rest are girls, including a twin sister — Flo said he felt pressure to succeed from a young age. The pursuit left him with some tough choices to make along the way. One was taking a job at the MGM Grand — one that didn't have anything to do with flashy Vegas lights.

"I was pulling silverware out of the trash," he recalled. "It was crazy. I had to go through all the food in the garbage, looking for forks and knives, so they could recycle them. At that time in Vegas, it was snowing. But I've had plenty more jobs since."

The main job right now is putting the finishing touches on his debut, Mail on Sunday.

The Poe Boy/ Atlantic project is set to feature collaborations with fellow Sunshine State rhymers Rick Ross, Brisco and Plies, along with Lil Wayne and Trey Songz.

Flo said he's choosing between three or four songs that could be the next single before his album drops in February. He's got records in the can with JR Rotem, Jazze Pha, and Cool and Dre. But ultimately, he may test out the songs in the strip clubs, where "Low" first took off. According to Flo, an exec from Atlantic suggested he spit on the bouncy track since he had roots in the 305, where bass music once ruled. Flo agreed but never thought the track would cross over like it has.

"We took it to the strip club just to test it out," Flo explained. "But the girls acted like they heard the record a thousand times before. I thought ['Low'] was gonna be big, but not this big." ...

Britney Spears is not pregnant!

Britney Spears is not pregnant, as photos that just surfaced online demonstrate.

The singer had been photographed at a Rite Aid in Los Angeles on Monday browsing home-pregnancy tests with her paparazzo boyfriend, Adnan Ghalib. She sparked speculation about her state of fertility with the photo stunt, a sort of is-she-or-isn't-she game, as her associate Sam Lufti told "Access Hollywood." "It's all bullshit," he said. "They're just toying with the paparazzi."

Spears dispelled the rumors herself when asked if she had tested positive, telling photographers and videographers, "I never had a pregnancy test. It was for my friend." (We assume she meant Ghalib, whose photo agency, FinalPixx, had the exclusive on the shopping shot.) Whether intentional or not, the singer later provided further evidence that would seem to confirm that statement, via a series of highly inappropriate photos taken by paparazzi as she left a Kitson clothing store late Wednesday night.

The singer's disheveled appearance and erratic behavior as of late — which resulted in her being hospitalized against her will earlier this month — has caused concern from her family, fans and peers, not to mention mental-health experts. Accordingly, The Associated Press acknowledged Thursday (January 17) that the news service had begun prepping Spears' obituary, as is standard operating procedure at most news organizations once public figures appear to be at risk. (It's a practice we at MTV News follow as well.)

"We are not wishing it, but if Britney passed away, it's easily one of the biggest stories in a long time," AP entertainment editor Jesse Washington told Us Weekly. "I think one would agree that Britney seems at risk right now. Of course, we would never wish any type of misfortune on anybody and hope that we would never have to use it until 50 years from now ... but if something were to happen, we would have to be prepared."

According to a recent E-Poll/Reuters survey of 1,941 American adults, the majority of people believe that alcohol or drugs is to blame for Spears' recent troubles (62 percent), while a few voiced the opinion that she is suffering from a mental illness.

My favorite album: "In Rainbows"

Radiohead are an English alternative rock band that formed in Oxfordshire in 1986. The band is composed of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, electronics), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, other instruments), Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals), Colin Greenwood (bass guitar, synthesisers) and Phil Selway (drums, percussion).

Radiohead released their first single, "Creep", in 1992, and their debut album, Pablo Honey, in 1993. Though initially unsuccessful, "Creep" was a worldwide hit when reissued a year later. Radiohead's popularity in the United Kingdom increased with the release of their second album, The Bends (1995). The band's textured guitar atmospheres and Yorke's falsetto singing were warmly received by critics and fans. With the release of OK Computer (1997), Radiohead were propelled to greater fame worldwide. Featuring an expansive sound and themes of modern alienation, OK Computer has often been acclaimed as a landmark record of the 1990s.

The release of Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001) saw the peak of Radiohead's popularity, although the albums divided critical opinion. This period saw a change in Radiohead's musical style, with their incorporation of experimental electronic music, Krautrock and jazz influences. Hail to the Thief (2003), Radiohead's sixth album, blended styles from throughout the band's career, mixing guitar-driven rock, electronic influences and contemporary lyrics. Radiohead subsequently left their record label, EMI and released their seventh album, In Rainbows (2007), through their own website as a digital download for which customers selected their own price.

In Rainbows is the seventh album of Radiohead. It was first released on 10 October 2007 as a digital download, followed by a self-released "discbox" with a second CD, two vinyl records, artwork and lyric booklets on 3 December 2007. The album was released as a standard CD in Japan on 26 December 2007, in Australia on 29 December 2007 and in North America on 1 January 2008. Elsewhere around the world, it was released on 31 December 2007. The first single, "Jigsaw Falling into Place", will follow on 14 January 2008 in the United Kingdom.

The band had worked on In Rainbows for more than two years, beginning in early 2005. In between recording, the band toured Europe and North America for three months in mid-2006. The announcement of details about the album led to media attention centered around the band's decision to first release the album online as a digital download for which fans could decide the price they paid.

The album release marks the band's first album after the end of their contract with EMI and the end of the longest gap between studio albums in their career. Upon its initial release as a digital download, the album earned widespread critical acclaim. Initially, the commercial success was unclear as the band declined to publicize their Internet sales numbers, however, upon its retail release In Rainbows entered the UK Album Chart and the United World Chart at number one and also topped the US Billboard 200 chart.

Alicia Keys: "No One"

Alicia Keys is an American R&B, soul, and neo soul singer, songwriter, pianist, record producer, actress, music video director, philanthropist, and author who has sold over 41 million albums and singles worldwide as of 2007, and has won numerous awards, including nine Grammy Awards, eleven Billboard Music Awards, and three American Music Awards.

As I Am (2007)

Since late 2006, Keys worked on her third studio album, As I Am—as confirmed in a red-carpet interview at the 2007 BET Awards on June 26—, released on November 13, 2007. Keys has talked to MTV about the album: "It's coming together incredibly. I am in love with this album. It's very fresh and new". Rolling Stone magazine reported in December 2005 that Keys and her long-term songwriting partner Kerry "Krucial" Brothers would start working seriously on the album in the later half of 2006.

"No One" is the lead single taken from Alicia Keys' third studio album, As I Am.

As I Am debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 742,000 copies, gaining Keys the second largest sales week of 2007 and the largest sales week for a female solo artist since Norah Jones' 2004 album Feels Like Home, and also set a record as Keys' largest sales week of her career. In addition, the album also debuted at number one the United World Chart selling 876,000. Since then, As I Am has sold over one million copies in two weeks of its debut, selling 349,000 copies in the second week. The lead single "No One" debuted at number seventy-one on the Billboard Hot 100, and has since peaked at number one, becoming Keys' third number one on the chart, and was also her fifth number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The album's second single, "Like You'll Never See Me Again", was recently released.

Keys sang the outro to John Mayer's song "Gravity" on his album Continuum and in a surprise appearance with him at his sold-out show at Madison Square Garden on February 28, 2007.

Keys has opened a new recording studio in Long Island, New York called The Oven Studios, which she co-owns with her production and songwriting partner Kerry "Krucial" Brothers. The studio was designed by renowned studio architect John Storyk of WSDG, designer of Jimi Hendrix' Electric Lady Studios. Keys and Brothers are the co-founders of KrucialKeys Enterprises, a production and songwriting team who assisted Keys in creating her award-winning albums as well as create music for other artists.

Rihanna: Good Girl Gone Bad

Rihanna went into the studio in early 2007 with Ne-Yo, Stargate, and Timbaland among others to record her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad. The album was released on June 5, 2007. It features Jay-Z and Ne-Yo as featured artists.

The first single, "Umbrella", featuring Jay-Z, was released on March 29, 2007, reaching number one in various countries, including the U.S. "Umbrella" was the #1 single in the UK for 10 consecutive weeks. It was the longest running #1 single since "Wet Wet Wet's" single "Love Is All Around", back in 1994, and the longest running #1 by a female artist since Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You", which also topped the chart for 10 weeks in 1992. It was produced by Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The-Dream" Nash. Umbrella was set at #2 at the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart, behind Beyoncé's Irreplaceable. However, Umbrella is the most succesful song of 2007, getting 8,160,000 points on the United World Chart.

The second single, "Shut Up and Drive", was sent to radio stations on June 5, has so far peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Her club airplay third single, "Don't Stop The Music" was premiered on BET's 106 & Park on July 20, 2007 and was released only in Canada. The song is also going to be released in the UK. However, the single was also released in parts of Europe, where it was a huge succes. The song peaked at #1 in countrys like Germany, France, The Netherlands and Austria. The song has so far reached #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the United World Chart.

The fourth single, "Hate That I Love You" featuring Ne-Yo, was released on August 21, and so far has peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Rihanna her sixth top ten hit.

The fifth single will be "Breakin' Dishes" according to Billboard and has so far peaked on #11 on the Hot Dance Club Play. However due to the high surge in airplay and digital sales of "Don't Stop the Music", which was never released in the US, it might be replacing Breakin' Dishes as the next single.

Rihanna worked with Timbaland on three songs in the album. Justin Timberlake co-wrote and provides background vocals on "Rehab" and "Sell Me Candy". In interviews, many have questioned the meaning and reasoning of the album title. The album title reflects the difference between the old and new Rihanna. "Bad means cool, bad means funky, bad means having an attitude, bad means being edgy. This album is definitely a great representation of who I am now, and where I am in my career," she says. Seven weeks after the album was released, it had gone platinum in the United States and 3x Platinum on the United World Albums Chart.

Also in 2007, Rihanna won World's Best-Selling Pop Female Artist & Entertainer of the Year at the 2007 World Music Awards. On November 18, 2007, she won Favorite Female Artist - Soul/R&B at the 2007 American Music Awards.Rihanna's hit song Shut Up and Drive won best R&B song at the 2008 People's Choice Award.

Starting September 12, 2007, Rihanna toured Canada and the United States in support of the album with several shows and then crossed to Europe. It is called the Good Girl Gone Bad Tour which will be released on DVD in early 2008 and feature the show performed at the Manchester Evening News Arena on 6th December 2007.

Rihanna received six Grammy Awards nominations: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (for "Umbrella"), Best R&B Song, Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals (for "Hate That I Love You") as well as Best Dance Recording (for "Don't Stop the Music").
